Off-Season Report: Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors are a team that are about as consistently good as it gets. However, the Drakes have shown us that being consistently good doesn’t equal championships. This surely a sore spot for as brash as he is brilliant GM Masai Ujiri so look for him to be really savvy in how he conducts his business this summer. Believe me, he’ll need every bit of it to come out of this summer ready to compete for a championship

Needs: To come to a mutually beneficial deal with Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka

Wants: Use space and draft picks to deepen the bench

Outlook

Toronto top to bottom is a very solid team. But one spot that they have experienced a bit of a void is that of a sound 2nd unit scorer. I think Terrence Ferguson can help them with the 23rd pick. The latest guy to forgo college to play internationally he’s 6’7″ so he can play both wing positions and is shooting the three ball at a 39% clip in his current season with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia.

The Raps are currently $35 million over the cap but they could create almost $20 million in space if they release all of their holds. Unfortunately those holds include Lowry and Ibaka, clearly not worth it. They’ll also have to make hard (but not nearly as hard) calls on P.J. Tucker and Patrick Patterson. I would expect them to have the $5.2 million MLE to use.

Names to watch: Tiago Splitter – C – Unrestricted, Ben McLemore – SG – Restricted, Joffrey Lauvergne – PF/C – Restricted, KJ McDaniels – SG/SF – Unrestricted
