Off-Season Preview: Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta had a pretty weird season. They got hot early giving us glimpses of that amazing 60 win team of a few years ago when internet basketball nerds like us were calling them Spurs East and then there was the turrible 10-15 record after the All-Star break they rode into the playoffs before getting dispatched in the first round by the Washington Wizards in six. This is a large point of concern from the usually predictable Hawks. You can usually set your watch by the type of season they’re going to have but last year proved to be a roller coaster they couldn’t wait to get off of. So what they most want to do is bring back a culture of consistency to A-Town.

Needs: Make a move on top free agents Paul Milsap and Tim Hardaway, Jr. If they move on from one or both invest in young talent and free agents in need spots.

Wants: Depth at point and shooting guard and quite possibly power forward.

Outlook

Now that the Atlanta Hawks have rid themselves of Dwight “DHo” Howard there is a clear need in the middle despite picking up the lesser Plumlee (Miles) in the trade. To add another big body I have the Hawks getting the big fella out of Creighton Justin Patton with the 19th pick. 7’3″ and a good finisher that can run the floor? Sign the Hawks up!

It’s kinda hard to suss out how much space Atlanta will able to play with this summer. Besides the obvious question marks of Milsap and Hardaway, Jr.’s pending free agency Ersan Ilyasova and Thabo Sefolosha have cap holds that total of $20 million. most likely the Hawks will try to take care of their own and have the $8.4 million MLE and $3.2 million bi-annual at their disposal. Shooting and a secondary ball handler/distributor are the biggest needs right now. As long as they retain their big two that is.
