Off-season Preview: New Orleans Pelicans

As All-Star weekend drew to a close this year while everyone was sleeping the New Orleans Pelicans acquired one of the most dominant bigs in the game in DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins to pair with their very own superstar post man and franchise player Anthony Davis. It was destined to be the on court marriage that would pull the Pels out of the doldrums and put them on a bullet train back to respectability. Needless to say the union got off to a rocky start. New Orleans went 7-10 in the 17 games with the pairing. But Boogie seems to be happy and ready to go in this upcoming season. Now, they just need to pay him (uh oh). But first their main objective this off-season is gauging the value of Jrue Holiday and implementing a contingency plan if the price is too steep.

Needs: Make a decision on Jrue Holiday and fill out roster with consistent role guys that will aid in later extension talks with Boogie.

Wants: Find a buyer for Omer Asik and point guard if Jrue jets.

Outlook

Well, being that the Pels do not possess a first round pick and are currently $10.2 million over the cap this won’t take too long. If Jrue leaves they will only have about $13 million a year to get a decent replacement in a VERY limited point guard free agency pool. If Jrue stays the Pels will only have the $8.4 million MLE and $3.2 bi-annual to fill spots. Not a lot a of cash for a team with some real concerns at spots. Retaining some of their cheapo guys will help but there are clear needs at small forward, backup power forward and shooting guard.
