Off-season Preview: Detroit Pistons

After a very underwhelming season that really went to hell towards the end of it the Detroit has to find out how to improve it’s roster with very scant resources. Flexibility isn’t a luxury afforded to the Pistons right now and to further complicate things they have to make a decision on one of their most productive players. Stan Van, I don’t envy you. But if there’s anyone savvy enough to unscrew this situation he’s the guy. But good Lord it ain’t gonna be easy.

Needs: Whether they keep him or let him walk try to come out of the Kentavious Caldwell-Pope situation somewhat in tact.

Wants: If KCP bolts address the shooting guard spot and work to not become a luxury tax candidate.

Outlook

With so much uncertainty around the KCP and really just the lack of depth even with him here it makes plenty of sense to address the 2 spot and Donovan Mitchell is Stan Van’s kind of guy. He’s a freak athlete that has a 6’10” wingspan on a 6’3″ frame and projects to be a strong two way guard. Best case get have a younger, cheaper KCP replacement and that ain’t bad at all.

The Pistons are terribly over capped to the tune of $21.8 million right now. Even if they renounce everyone not bolted down by a guarantee deal they still don’t have any space. So they’ll be using the $8.4 million MLE and will have to be careful with the bi-annual of $3.2 million to fill out the roster. Luckily, Detroit doesn’t have many holes to fill and their larger issues involve chemistry between their current guys. Shooting guard is their biggest hole of course but an extra body wouldn’t hurt.

Names to watch:  KJ McDaniels – SG/SF – Team Option, Omri Casspi – SF – Justin Holiday – SG/SF – Unrestricted, Langston Galloway – SG – Player Option, Willie Reed – C – Unrestricted
